This extension add notify upon reply as default and a switch in UCP so goups/members can switch it off.
Admin can set permission for this.

Notify upon reply v1.0.2

Installation:

1. Download the latest release.
2. Unzip the downloaded release, and change the name of the folder to `notifyuponreply`.
3. In the `ext` directory of your phpBB board, create a new directory named `dmzx` (if it does not already exist).
4. Copy the `notifyuponreply` folder to `/ext/dmzx/` if done correctly, you'll have the main extension class at
   (your forum root)/ext/dmzx/notifyuponreply/composer.json
5. Navigate in the ACP to `Customise -> Manage extensions`
6. Look for `Notify upon reply` under the Disabled Extensions list, and click its `Enable` link.

I don't understand this extension.

On a fresh phpbb we already have on UCP an option:
"Notify me upon replies by default".

Isn't this redundant?

Yes you are right.
but that option is not enabled by default.

but this extension will enable the notification option enable by default
