I'd recommend trying to install it on a test forum.

You don't have somewhere to host one?

I test all my stuff in my XAMPP local install. Setup the latest phpBB there.
You can select "Can reuse password" in acp then logout and register a few usernames (new users)
Then you can test this extension and any other before uploading it to your board.
But I do have to say I will test live on some things.

Going to try it out on the slot car board. If it breaks it no big deal
I want to re-do it anyway.

I test things on my localhost but we have all setup test sites on our live boards also.

Create a directory in the root of your forum named "test" and copy the latest phpBB files in there.
You will need a new database setup for it then visit https://yoursite.com/test/ and install it.
