I propose creating an extension that lists the subforums on the home page in a collapsible format.
Something like this:
FORUM CATEGORY
Some Forum
Subforums +
> Subforum 1
> Subforum 2
> Subforum 3
> Subforum X
> Subforum Y
> Subforum Z
Clicking the plus/minus would open a collapsible box containing the subforums.
